Shed Site Prep

Shed site prep in DeLand, FL.

A level, well-drained base is the difference between a shed that stays square and one that sags.

Before a shed ever lands in your yard, the ground underneath it matters more than most people expect — especially in Central Florida. Our sandy soil shifts, settles, and drains quickly, so a shed placed on unprepared ground can slowly go out of level. That's when doors start to stick and floors feel soft.

One thing to know up front: site preparation is completed by the property owner. On delivery day the crew levels the shed on blocks and anchors it — but clearing the spot, dealing with slopes and low areas, and building up a pad happen before the truck arrives, and that part is yours. This page covers why a good base matters, how leveling and drainage work, and how to pick a drop location. If you'd rather just talk it through, call 386-775-8676.

Leveling, drainage & drop location

Level: A shed needs to sit on a flat, compacted base so its weight is supported evenly. The crew levels the shed on blocks on delivery day, but the ground itself is the owner's to prepare — a spot that's already close to level makes for a better, longer-lasting result.

Drainage: Water is the enemy. Pick a spot that's naturally higher or drains well, and avoid low areas where rain pools. A well-drained base keeps moisture away from the floor and helps the whole building last.

Drop location: Choose a spot with a clear path for the delivery truck, away from sprinkler heads, septic areas, and low wires. The right spot balances how it looks, how it drains, and whether we can actually get the shed to it.

Free delivery, leveling on blocks, and anchoring are included within 25 miles of our DeLand yard — but the site itself must be prepared by the property owner before delivery day.

Building the base — materials from our yard

If your spot needs building up, we stock the base materials at the same DeLand yard, so you can prep the site and buy your shed in one stop. Many customers build a compacted pad using crushed concrete or limerock over a fill-dirt base.

For the specific materials and how a pad goes together, see our shed pad materials page. When you're ready for the building itself, browse our sheds or read about delivery & setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does shed site prep matter in Florida?

Florida sand shifts, settles, and drains fast, so a shed set on unprepared ground can end up out of level over time — which makes doors stick and floors sag. A level, well-drained base keeps the building sitting square and keeps water moving away from it.

What makes a good shed base?

A spot that's level, compacted, and drains well. Many customers build a compacted pad out of crushed concrete, limerock, or gravel over a fill-dirt base. The right build depends on your ground, your drop location, and the shed — ask the yard team what fits your site.

Do you handle site prep, or just sell the materials?

Site preparation is completed by the property owner — we don't clear, grade, or build pads. What we do: sell and deliver the fill dirt, crushed concrete, limerock, and gravel for the base, and help you plan the right build for your spot. On delivery day the crew levels the shed on blocks and anchors it, but the ground needs to be ready before they arrive.

How do I choose where the shed goes?

Pick a spot that's naturally higher or drains well, away from where water pools after rain, with a clear path for the delivery truck. Keep it clear of sprinkler heads, septic areas, and low wires. Not sure? Call us and we'll talk through your yard.

How much base material do I need?

It depends on the shed footprint, how level your ground already is, and how deep a pad you want. Call 386-775-8676 with your dimensions and we'll help you size the order — call to confirm quantity.

Do I need a permit to prep a shed pad?

Rules vary by property, city, HOA, and jurisdiction — confirm with Volusia County or your city before you buy or place a shed. This isn't legal advice.
